Schalken turned professional in 1994 , having been an oustanding junior. His career peaked in 2003 , when his ATP Singles ranking reached 11 in the world. He has been ranked as high as 21 in the world in Doubles . His most significant performance came in reaching the semi-finals of the US Open in 2002 , where he was defeated by eventual champion Pete Sampras . He has won 9 singles titles, as well as 6 in doubles, amassing winnings in excess of US$5m.
