Information About

Sizewell

The village was part of the Ogilvie Estate , which extended as far south as Aldeburgh. Sizewell Hall, now used as a Christian conference centre, is still owned by the Ogilvie family.

NUCLEAR REACTORS

The village itself is overshadowed by two separate Nuclear Power Station s, Sizewell A and '''Sizewell B'''.

Sizewell A nuclear power station was built in the 1960s and started generation in 1966 . It consists of two 1000 MWt Magnox reactors, producing a total electrical power output of 420 MWe . The power station is due to start the decommissioning process in 2007, after shutdown in 2006.

The Sizewell B Nuclear Reactor is UK's only large Pressurised Water Reactor (PWR), producing 1188 MWe. It was built between 1988 and 1995. It is readily visible from the nearby holiday beaches.

The Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA) is responsible for placing contracts for the decommissioning of Sizewell A, at a budgeted cost of £ 1.2 billion.
