Silwan




Silwan is a largely Arab neighborhood of East Jerusalem , south of Jerusalem's Old City. This village was the origin of Jerusalem, and was a part of the city the 12th century. Nowdays, Its population is roughly 40,000.

Before being included in Jerusalem's municipal boundaries in 1961 , it was a separate village, mentioned by Al-Muqaddasi ; archeological evidence indicates that it has been a settlement since at least 1500 BC , predating David . In recent years, it has frequently been targeted for Jewish settlement.

In 1882 , a small Yemenite Jewish community moved into the village, but they were forced to flee the 'pogrom' of 1936 .
