Information About

Sileby

Sileby is a village and Civil Parish in the Soar Valley in Leicestershire , between Leicester and Loughborough . Nearby villages include Barrow Upon Soar , Mountsorrel , Ratcliffe-on-the-Wreake , Seagrave and Cossington .

  • listed building, and only 4% of listed buildings in the country are Grade II--- status, which means it is of very significant interest. The Gothic tower now houses a fine ring of 10 bells, which attract ringers from far and wide.

Just a little way down the high Street stands a building known as ''The Maltings''. It was built during the 1870s by the Sharpe family as a brewery to supply their chain of 15 pubs and 20 off-licenses in the region. They became famed for their Sileby Stout. The depression of the 1920 saw the demise of the family business and it was sold to Strettons, part of the Guiness Group.
After this the building was then used by Plunketts (another Guinness business) for grain drying until they sold it in 1971, during this time the aroma of hops could be smelt over most of the village. The new owners gave the building it’s Maltings name and converted it into the small industrial units that have survived until recently. It has recently been sold to developers to convert into living accommodation.
Continuing the tour down the High Street we see the old Wesleyan Chapel, now the home of the community centre and sports hall.
Another prominent landmark is the Cemetery on a hillside at the edge of the village.

The village has a Station on the Ivanhoe Line , and trains run regularly to Leicester and Loughborough.

Pub s include ''The Horse and Trumpet'', ''The Free Trade Inn'', ''The Railway Inn'', ''The Swan'', and ''The Malthouse''.

Sileby has a community magazine, known as Talk@Sileby and is published by volunteers 4 times a year. Electronic copies of all issues can be found on the village website (another project run by volunteers).
