Shirley Douglas, OC , LL.D (born 1934 in Weyburn, Saskatchewan ) is a Canadian television, film and stage actress. Shirley Douglas' acting career combined with her family name has made her recognisable in Canadian Film, Television and Politics. Douglas's acting career began in 1950 with a role in the Regina Little Theatre entry in the Dominion Drama Festival , where she won the best actress award. In 1952 Ms. Douglas graduated from the Royal Academy Of Dramatic Art in London , U.K., and stayed in England for ten years, performing for theatre and television. She then moved to Los Angeles , and returned to Toronto in 1977 with her three children. She continues to act and her career since then has encompassed several memorable roles on stages in Canada , the United Kingdom and the United States . She has portayed prominent Feminist Nellie McClung , family Matriarch and business woman May Bailey in the television series "Wind at my Back", Hagar Shipley of Margaret Laurence 's " The Stone Angel ", and even characters in popular Science Fiction series' like "The Silver Surfer " and " Flash Gordon ". In 2000 she won a Gemini Award for her performance in the TV film “Shadow Lake.” She is the daughter of former Saskatchewan Premier and Canadian statesman Tommy Douglas , and the mother of Tom Douglas. Having been married to actor Donald Sutherland , from 1966 to 1970 , she is the mother of twins Rachel and Kiefer Sutherland . Shirley Douglas was last seen on stage with her son Kiefer at the Royal Alexandra Theatre and the National Arts Centre in " The Glass Menagerie ". As the daughter of the man who brought Medicare to Canada, Douglas has also been one of Canada's most prominent activists in favor of protecting the publicly-funded health care system from Privatization . For these contributions, as well as her contributions to the performing arts, Douglas was named an officer of the Order Of Canada in 2003 . During the Canadian Federal Election, 2006 , Shirley Douglas campaigned on behalf of the federal New Democratic Party . Her father Tommy Douglas has been first leader of Canada's federal NDP. Shirley Douglas' public speaking skills as well as her reputation and family history drew significant media attention. The NDP gained 10 additional seats in the Canadian House Of Commons during that election. It has also been announced that Shirley Douglas has received the Distinguished Canadian Award from the Seniors’ Education Centre at the University Of Regina . An award that was first presented to Tommy Douglas almost 20years before. She will also give an honourary lecture at Trent University in November 2006. In June she is set to receive a space on the Wall of Fame at the National Arts Centre in Ottawa , and a star on Canada's Walk Of Fame in Toronto .
