Located in central Shiraz , of Fars Province , it was founded as a college within Pahlavi University in 1950. In 1954, a Faculty of Nursing was added, followed by a Faculty of Dentistry in 1969. Other colleges were then established as well. As with all other medical schools, it separated from its founding base, Shiraz University, in 1986, as an independent institution. It is ranked as one of Iran's top medical schools, with more than 5000 students studying for 83 different degrees, and a staff of nearly 13000 faculty and personnel. With 13 hospitals, SUMS is a regional health care provider and the main medical center in Fars Province . NOTABLE ALUMNI
