Sheldon Jackson College began in 1879 as a "training" school for Alaska Natives. Similar to Carlisle.

Sheldon Jackson College began as a missionary for Alaska Natives. The purpose was to promote labor skill in natives and to indoctrinate them with Christianity. Sheldon Jackson was the founder of the Sitka Training School and worked closely with Brady (Governor).
