Shek Tong Tsui (石塘嘴 or 石塘咀) is a town within the Central And Western District on the Hong Kong Island , Hong Kong . BOUNDARY This district is bounded to the east by Water Street, north by the sea, south by Pokfulam Road and the Third Street, west by the inetersection of Queen's Road West and Belcher Street. HISTORY This area derived its name from the old quarry (located around the Hill Road and Belcher Garden) used by the Hakka people since the 17th century, hence 石塘嘴 or mouth (嘴) of the Stone (石) Pond (塘). The area was settled in 1880 . In the early 1900s , the Hong Kong Island 's red light district was moved from Possession Point in Sheung Wan to this area. Brothel s in this area inspired numerous Novel s and Hong Kong Film s, most notably, '' Rouge ''(1987) which starred Anita Mui and Leslie Cheung . This lasted until the outbreak of Japanese Occupation, when Japanese opened the "Comfort Women" district at Dai Fuk Hou (大佛口) reagion of Wanchai, which maked Wanchai the red light district of Hong Kong Island until these days. Because of its close proximity to the harbor, large number of northern Chinese shiping business owners and sailors of Tianjin, Qingdao and Shanghai origins settled down in this district. Most notably Tianjin natives from this district includes Li Si-qi (李司琪) the famous actress, Shi Wen-hong (史文鸿) the Free University Berlin-educated Polytechnic University political scientist who was the Chairman of the Liberal Party, and Li Cheng (李诚) the noted pyschologist and professor at the Chinese University of Hong Kong TRANSPORT The tram terminus near Witty Street is one of the termini of Hong Kong Tramways . Bus and minibus services are also available along the main streets. The West Island Line , an extension of the existing MTR Island Line , will have a Station near this area. |
