Sharona is a practical nurse from New Jersey , and a single mother of her young son Benjy after a divorce. She moved to San Francisco to be closer to her sister Gail, and ended up being employed by the show's main character, Adrian Monk . The series started a while after she took the job, and just how she got it and what their early relationship was like are never explained (although we are told that it was Captain Leland Stottlemeyer who engaged her as a nurse for Monk). When Monk becomes a consulting Detective , Sharona helps out, sometimes doing independent investigations and sometimes even using her sex appeal to get information that Monk cannot. She also does all kinds of things that Monk's OCD and Phobia s prevent him from doing as she has little such reservations herself. It was revealed in the episode ''Mr. Monk Goes To the Circus'', however, that she has a fear of Elephant s. Schram left the show halfway through the third season due to a contract dispute, and it was explained in the show that the character of Sharona had moved back to New Jersey and remarried her ex-husband. There was an instant uproar in the show's fanbase, as almost all of them considered the character to be an essential part of the show, and they were also upset at the way she left, saying that it was completely out of character. The controversy still continues as many fans still have not warmed to Sharona's replacement, Natalie Teeger . |
