The school was founded in 1960 as part of Shahid Beheshti University , and was re-structured in 1986 when it separated off onto its own. Apart from its teaching and research commitments, the university is also responsible for health care provision to a community of four million people living in northern and northeastern Tehran and the neighbouring cities of Damavand , Firouzkooh , Varamin and Pakdasht . The school has a national and international reputation for excellence in postgraduate teaching and research in clinical sciences and practices. It consists of 8 Faculties, 12 Teaching Hospitals, 6 Non-teaching Hospitals, and 7 District Health Centers. Currently, 13000 students study there in various fields.
