Scottish National Portrait Gallery




The Scottish National Portrait Gallery is an Art Gallery on Queen Street, Edinburgh , Scotland . It holds the national collections of Portrait s, all of which are of, but not necessarily by, Scots. In addition it also holds the Scottish National Photography Collection . It is a red Sandstone Gothic Revival building, designed by Robert Rowand Anderson , and modelled on the Doges Palace in Venice .

It was established by newspaper magnate John Ritchie Findlay , owner of '' The Scotsman '', who presented it to the nation. It opened in 1889 .
