Scott County is a County located in the State of Indiana . As of 2000 , the population is 22,960. The County Seat is Scottsburg 6 . GEOGRAPHY According to the U.S. Census Bureau , the county has a total area of 499 Km&2 (193 Mi&2 ). 493 km&2 (190 mi&2) of it is land and 6 km&2 (2 mi&2) of it is water. HISTORY Scott County was formed in 1820. It was named for Gen. Charles Scott , who was Governor of Kentucky from 1808 to 1812. DEMOGRAPHICS As of the Census 2 of 2000, there were 22,960 people, 8,832 households, and 6,491 families residing in the county. The Population Density was 47/km&2 (121/mi&2). There were 9,737 housing units at an average density of 20/km&2 (51/mi&2). The racial makeup of the county was 98.64% White , 0.05% Black or African American , 0.16% Native American , 0.18% Asian , 0.00% Pacific Islander , 0.43% from Other Races , and 0.54% from two or more races. 0.97% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race. There were 8,832 households out of which 35.00% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.60% were Married Couples living together, 11.30% had a female householder with no husband present, and 26.50% were non-families. 22.50% of all households were made up of individuals and 8.90% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.58 and the average family size was 2.99. In the county the population was spread out with 26.30% under the age of 18, 9.20% from 18 to 24, 30.30% from 25 to 44, 23.20% from 45 to 64, and 11.10% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females there were 98.60 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 95.60 males. The median income for a household in the county was $34,656, and the median income for a family was $39,475. Males had a median income of $30,954 versus $22,464 for females. The Per Capita Income for the county was $16,065. 13.10% of the population and 10.50% of families were below the Poverty Line . 17.70% of those under the age of 18 and 9.70% of those 65 and older were living below the poverty line.
