Information About

Sayla Mass

Sayla Mass (セイラ・マス) is a fictional character from the anime series Mobile Suit Gundam, voiced by You Inoue (Japanese) and Alaina Brunett (English). At the beginning of the Mobile Suit Gundam TV series, Sayla is a civilian of Side 7, who comes abroad the mobile cruiser White Base along with Amuro Ray, Fraw Bow and Hayato Kobayashi.

Sayla Mass has a secret past which is revealed in later episodes. She is looking for her brother Edward Mass, whom she affectionately called Casval. Her brother is better known to Gundam fans as the Red Comet - Char Aznable. Sayla's true identity is Artesia Som Daikun, sister to Casval Rem Daikun and the daughter of Zeon Zum Deikun, the founder of the Republic of Zeon, who was assassinated by (or on behalf of) Degwin Sodo Zabi, the leader of Principality of Zeon.

Sayla, like Amuro Ray, is a Newtype. Toward the end of the original Gundam series, Char asks her to leave the battlefield and to go to Amuro. Given the somewhat intimate scenes toward the end involving Amuro, the fact that Fraw Bow is married to Hayato Kobayashi and Amuro's previous attachment to other Newtypes, such as Lalah Sune, the series' creator Tomino Yoshiyuki may have originally intended Sayla to be Amuro's soulmate in the later series, but there is no clear indication.

In Zeta Gundam, Sayla appeared only in non-speaking cameos (due to her seiyuu being on safari in Africa when the series was produced), and Amuro was romantically involved with Beltorchika Irma, who closely resembled Sayla in appearance. In Gundam ZZ, Sayla showed up mid-way through the series with Judau Ashta's younger (and though dead) sister, Leina. Within the last 3 episodes, she appears again, bringing Leina with her to see Bright Noa, where she gives him a letter from his family, and asks what he's heard of her brother.

In Char's Counter Attack, Amuro's girlfriend appeared to be Chan Agi, and Sayla doesn't appear in the movie. However, in the novel version, entitled Char's Counterattack - Beltorchika's Children, Beltorchika (who takes the almost EXACT same place as Chan, with the exception of the death scene) and Amuro are a common-law couple. Mid-way through the novel, we learn that Beltorchika is pregnant with Amuro's kid, so that disipates the Amuro/Sayla relationship. As for Sayla, while she does not appear in the movie, one of Char's last actions is looking at a picture of his sister and commenting that at least she would live on.
