Older name was Englezovac meaning "Englishtown" after a Scottish Francis Mackenzie , who donated a piece of land to Serbian Orthodox Church for the construction of Temple Of Saint Sava , here. Hystoricaly, Savinac represented geographical end opposite to Kalemegdan – on Belgrade's line Kalemegdan - Trg Republike - Terazije - Beogradjanka - Slavija – Savinac where central line - tram no.1 used to run, in the first half of 20th century.
