"Saturday Night" was the original name of the show we know today as Saturday Night Live , which explains the familiar opening catchphrase "Live from New York, it's Saturday Night!" Before the first episode in 1975, Lorne Michaels had to change the name because of a conflict with an existing (and subsequently short-lived) show on another network called "Saturday Night Live with Howard Cosell ".
