The Incorporated Village of Sands Point is in the Town Of North Hempstead . Many believe that this was the home of the title character in F. Scott Fitzgerald 's book, " The Great Gatsby ". HISTORY The village was incorporated in 1910 . In 1917 the village absorbed the communities of Barkers Point and Motts Point. It was originally owned by 3 families. Sands, Vanderbilt, and Cornwells. GEOGRAPHY Sands Point is located at 40°50'55" North, 73°42'42" West (40.848595, -73.711724). According to the United States Census Bureau , the village has a total area of 14.6 Km&2 (5.6 Mi&2 ). 11.0 km&2 (4.2 mi&2) of it is land and 3.6 km&2 (1.4 mi&2) of it is water. The total area is 24.56% water. DEMOGRAPHICS As of the Census of 2000, there were 2,786 people, 878 households, and 783 families residing in the village. The Population Density was 253.7/km&2 (657.5/mi&2). There were 902 housing units at an average density of 82.1/km&2 (212.9/mi&2). The racial makeup of the village was 88.33% White , 1.62% African American , 0.00% Native American , 8.26% Asian , 0.00% Pacific Islander , 1.26% from Other Races , and 0.54% from two or more races. 3.91% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race. There were 878 households out of which 40.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 82.3% were Married Couples living together, 4.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 10.8% were non-families. 8.7% of all households were made up of individuals and 4.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 3.12 and the average family size was 3.22. In the village the population was spread out with 27.3% under the age of 18, 4.5% from 18 to 24, 22.9% from 25 to 44, 29.7% from 45 to 64, and 15.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 42 years. For every 100 females there were 92.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 86.5 males. The median income for a household in the village was in excess of $100,000, as is the median income for a family. Males had a median income of over $70,000 versus $60,938 for females. The Per Capita Income for the village was $95,647. 3.1% of the population and 2.1% of families were below the Poverty Line . 2.2% of those under the age of 18 and 3.6% of those 65 and older were living below the poverty line.
