Information About

San Ignacio, Baja California Sur

OASIS IN THE DESERT

It’s obvious that you’ve arrived in San Ignacio. The arid desert terrain gives way to a large grove of lush green date palms that surround the tropical oasis of San Ignacio. There’s a large spring fed pond and small river on the outskirts of town that feeds into the central plaza and village next to the eighteenth century Jesuit mission. The relaxed atmosphere in San Ignacio exemplifies a very traditional and culturally unchanged old Mexico style ambiance. The town of San Ignacio is the gateway to San Ignacio Lagoon , the winter time santuary of the Pacific Gray Whale .

SAN IGNACIO

San Ignacio is located approximately 532 miles from the San Diego / Tijuana border in the Mexican state of Baja California Sur . If you are driving expect a ten to twelve hour drive from the border to San Ignacio. It is highly recommended you only drive during daylight hours due to livestock that frequently cross the road at night. Highway One is a very well maintained four-lane highway from Tijuana to Ensenada . After driving south of Ensenada, highway one soon becomes a narrow (well maintained) two-lane highway that runs north and south through the high desert. There are numerous towns in which to purchase fuel, and your only choice for fuel is PEMEX. Be sure to fuel up at El Rosario , which is the last town you’ll be able to buy fuel until you reach Guerrero Negro , 190 miles further south.
