firms, Permira and Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co. , have agreed to buy SBS for about 1.7 billion Euro s ( $ 2.1 billion) in cash. SBS owns and operates private commercial television and radio stations in Western and Central Europe. In the countries in which SBS operates, privately owned television and radio stations were first introduced less than ten years ago. Consequently, viewership, listenership and advertiser acceptance are still developing in these markets. Hours of viewing and listening, and the percentages of total advertising spending devoted to television and radio, are substantially lower than in the United States and well below the European-wide averages. The Company believes that the markets in which it operates will continue to grow faster over time than more mature markets such as those in North America. TELEVISION Television operations started in 1990 in Scandinavia . In March 2005 SBS acquired C More , a Nordic Pay Tv provider.
