Born in Los Angeles, California to an Irish-American Hollywood movie screenwriter Charles O'Neal and actress Patricia Callaghan , O'Neal first shot to stardom on the Soap Opera '' Peyton Place ''. His role in '' Love Story '' gained him an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor .
