Rumson is a Borough located in Monmouth County , New Jersey . As of the United States 2000 Census , the borough had a total population of 7,137. GEOGRAPHY Rumson is located at 40°22'11" North, 74°0'6" West (40.369644, -74.001667). According to the United States Census Bureau , the borough has a total area of 18.8 Km&2 (7.2 Mi&2 ). 13.5 km&2 (5.2 mi&2) of it is land and 5.2 km&2 (2.0 mi&2) of it is water. The total area is 27.76% water. Public parks include Victory Park, Rogers Park, Piping Rock Park and Riverside Park. DEMOGRAPHICS As of the Census of 2000, there were 7,137 people, 2,452 households, and 1,988 families residing in the borough. The Population Density was 527.9/km&2 (1,366.0/mi&2). There were 2,610 housing units at an average density of 193.1/km&2 (499.5/mi&2). The racial makeup of the borough was 97.77% White , 0.24% African American , 0.06% Native American , 1.06% Asian , 0.00% Pacific Islander , 0.36% from Other Races , and 0.50% from two or more races. 1.39% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race. There were 2,452 households out of which 44.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 71.3% were Married Couples living together, 7.8% had a female householder with no husband present, and 18.9% were non-families. 16.8% of all households were made up of individuals and 7.9% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.91 and the average family size was 3.29. In the borough the population was spread out with 31.9% under the age of 18, 3.5% from 18 to 24, 26.6% from 25 to 44, 25.2% from 45 to 64, and 12.8% who are 65 years of age or older. The median resident age is 39.2 years old. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there were 93.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.6 males. The median income for a household in the borough was $120,865, and the median income for a family was $140,668. Males had a median income of $100,000 versus $47,260 for females. The Per Capita Income for the borough was $73,692. 3.2% of the population and 3.4% of families were below the Poverty Line . 2.4% of those under the age of 18 and 0.7% of those 65 and older were living below the poverty line. The ancestries of residents are: Irish (33.4%), German (17.9%), Italian (16.4%), English (13.8%), Polish (6.2%), United States (5.3%). HISTORY Legend has it that early settlers bought the piece of land known as Rumson from the Native Americans for some rum. But as far back as 1663, long before the area was officially named Rumson, Native Americans called it “Navarumsunk”. Over the years it has been shortened to “Rumson”. Rumson was purchased by English settlers in pieces. The first purchase is dated January 25 , 1665 , and it included parts of Middletown. The rest of the area was purchased April 7 , 1665 and June 5 , 1665 . There are many old, historic homes in Rumson, but the oldest is the 700-acre Treadwell House, named after a family that summered here for almost 100 years. It is the second oldest building in Monmouth County, and dates back to 1670. Residents of Rumson in the 19th Century enjoyed many activities, such as swimming in the adjacent Navesink River , the Atlantic Ocean , or taking a wagon ride. In winter, they used the river for ice-boating. Rumson has always been a very affluent area. In fact, it is still one of the wealthiest towns in New Jersey. The homes are spectacularly large, many with private yachts anchored in the Navesink River, which serves as their backyard. Locals enjoy the beautiful beaches just over the Sea Bright Bridge, as well as a quick commuter ferry to downtown Manhattan . GOVERNMENT Local government Rumson is governed by the Borough form of government, with a mayor and a six-member Borough Council. The mayor serves a four-year term. Borough Council members serve three-year terms on a staggered basis, with two seats coming up for election each year. The Mayor of Rumson is John E. Ekdahl, Rumson's mayor, whose term of office ends on December 31 , 2007 . Members of the Borough Council are Council President Joan P. DeVoe (term ends December 2007), Shaun P. Broderick (2005) J. Matthews Conaty (2007), John J. Conklin, Jr. (2006), Robert Kammerer (2005) and Mark Rubin (2005). Federal, state and county representation Rumson is in the Twelfth Congressional District and is part of New Jersey's 11th Legislative District. EDUCATION The Rumson Public Schools serves students in grades K-8 at the Deane-Porter Elementary School (K-3, 378 students) and at the Forrestdale Middle School (4-8, 608 students) Students in grades 9 - 12 attend the Rumson-Fair Haven Regional High School , a regional, four-year comprehensive public High School , serving students from both Fair Haven and Rumson.
