Rudolf Veiel




Rudolf Veiel ( December 10 , 1883 , Stuttgart - March 19 , 1956 , Stuttgart) was a German General der Panzertruppe during World War II .

His first army service was noticed as Fahnenjunker in the Ulanen-Regiment 19 in April 1904 . He became Leutnant on August 18 , 1905 .

On the beginning of the World War I he was a commander of the Squadron in the Württemberg Reserve- Dragoon - Regiment in which he served until the end of the war.

After the war he was a member of the Freikorps in Württemberg ( 1919 ) and than, from October 1 , 1920 , in the 18th (Saxon) Cavalry Regiment of the Reichswehr . From June 1 , 1923 Rudolf Veiel commanded the Squadron in 10th (Prussian) Cavalry Regiment where he was promoted to Major on March 1 , 1927 . In the same year he became an Adjutant in 3rd Cavalry Division and stood there until April 1 , 1931 when he became an Oberstleutnant . From November 1 , 1932 to October 1 , 1935 he commanded the 18th Cavalry Regiment and than 2nd Rifle Brigade until February 1 , 1938 when he was positioned to be a commander of the 2nd Panzer Division . In the meantime he became Oberst on December 1 , 1933 , Generalmajor on January 1 , 1937 and Generalleutnant on October 10 , 1938.

In early stages of the World War II, as a commander of the 2nd Panzer Division, he played a distinguished role in the invasions of Poland ( 1939 ) and France ( 1940 ), Balkans Campaign ( 1941 ) and in the Invasion On The Soviet Union (1941). For the achievements, as a divisional commander, he was awarder with the Knight’s Cross Of The Iron Cross on June 3 , 1940.

After defeat of the German war machinery under Moscow , on April 1 , 1942, he became a General der Panzertruppe and later commanded the XLVIII Panzer Corps until September 28 , 1942 when he was posted to be a Chief of revitalization in the Headquarters of the ''Army Group Center'' . He stood on this duty until June 6 , 1943 .
From September 1943 General Veiel was on a duty as a Commanding General of the Wehrkreis V (Battle Sector V) in Stuttgart (until July 20 , 1944 ). He was relieved of command due to complicity in July 20, 1944 Conspiracy . He was put in the Führerreserve of the OKH on April 16 , 1945 .

When the World War II was over Rudolf Veiel spent two years in American captivity until May 12 , 1947 when he was released.
