HISTORY REGIMENTAL SYMBOLS Prior to 1935: Cap badge same as Durham Light Infantry (UK) i.e. a stringed bugle surmounted by a crown with DLI below the crown. Collar badges: the badge of the colony of Natal, namely: the British State Arms over two gallopping Wildebeest (Gnu). 1935-1964 Natal Colonial coat of arms replaced DLI on the cap badge. A scroll with the motto: PRIMUS IN AFRICA was also added. In 1935 HM George VI became Colonel-in-Chief and the prefix "Royal" was added thus chaning the name of the unit to "Royal Durban Light Infantry" (RDLI). 1964-present In 1964 the crown was dropped and replaced by a lion on a sunburst. The colalr badges were also changed in that the British State Arms were replaced by the South African Coat-of-Arms "1930 unembelished" pattern. BATTLE HONOURS EXTERNAL LINKS |
