HISTORY

Rosalie Shire was one of the earliest areas settled in the Darling Downs region of south-east Queensland. The first Europe ans to settle in the area were Henry Hughes and Henry Isaac, who squatted on land surrounding Gowrie Creek and took up a 20- Mile (32 kilometre) frontage to that vital source of water. They founded Gowrie Station. They were soon followed by others who took up Sheep runs in the Darling Downs portion of the Shire. Soon the whole area was occupied by only three vast stations: Gowrie-Goombungee, Westbrook and Rosalie Plains.

A major lifeline of the area at the time was the Railroad . The main Western Line provided reliable transport to settlers along the southern boundary of the Shire from 1867-68 and the Pengarry to Meringandan line provided a similar robust service - especially welcome in wet weather - to many people in that area. Two other branches from the main line were constructed to facilitate agricultural development and expansion.
