He was a long-time driver in NASCAR's Winston West Series and AutoZone Elite Division Southwest Series Champion. He was noticed by Dale Earnhardt while participating in the NASCAR Winter Heat Series on ESPN2 . Hornaday was hired to drive Earnhardt's truck in the Craftsman Truck Series in 1995, and drove for Earnhardt from 1995 until 2000, the last in the NASCAR Busch Series . Hornaday won the 1996 and 1998 Craftsman Truck Series Championships. He drove in the Nextel Cup Series in 2001 for A. J. Foyt Racing, and drove for various teams in different series in 2002, including Hendrick Motorsports . He drove for two seasons in the Busch Series for Richard Childress , and moved back to the Craftsman Truck Series driving for Kevin Harvick in 2005, winning a spectacular finish against Bobby Labonte in Atlanta.
