Rodent's Revenge

INTRODUCTION

''Rodent's Revenge'' was created in 1991 by Christopher Lee Fraley and was distributed with the Microsoft Entertainment Pack , which was included in early Windows systems. The player takes on the role of a Mouse , with the objective being to trap Cats by pushing blocks around. Doing so changes the cats into Cheese , which the mouse can eat for extra points. The game has a high score table which shows the best games played and the best games played on the current day.

Rodent's Revenge was created with Visual Basic .

LEVELS

The game has 50 levels, which get increasingly harder, but the player is allowed to start playing at any level. Each level is made more difficult via the following methods:

  • '' Sink Holes '' - These trap the mouse for a few seconds.

  • '' Mouse Traps '' - If the mouse goes into one of these, it dies.

  • ''Flying Balls of Yarn '' - If these hit the mouse, it dies.

  • ''Unmovable Blocks'' - These make it harder to trap the cats.

  • ''Less Movable Blocks'' - This means less potential ways to trap the cats.

To win a level, the mouse must catch all the cats, before it is killed by an obstacle or caught by a cat. The player is given three lives before their game is over.

CLOCK

During each level a Clock ticks away until it reaches the blue line. When this happens more cats are spawned into the level, making it more difficult, but also increasing the potential reward. After the new cats have spawned, the blue line moves further around the clock and it resumes ticking.

When the blue line reaches the top no more cats will be created, although the hands of the clock continue to move.

ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE

The cats don't possess much Intelligence . They appear to follow these rules:

# If the cat can move nearer to the mouse, it will move one square closer.
# If it can't move closer, it will move into one random adjacent square that isn't blocked by something else.

The cats don't have any sophisticated path finding abilities, so they would never move around a large obstacle to catch the mouse if it meant moving away from the mouse. Sometimes the random moves of the mouse will allow it to accidentally move around obstacles that only take up one square.
