is a village in
East Sussex ,
England . It is approximately 16 km (10 miles) north of
Hastings and 13 miles southeast of
Tunbridge Wells . The
River Rother passes through the village. The village is part of the
Civil Parish of
Salehurst , which has a population of approximately 2,600.
The village is thought to date back to
1176 when a
Cistercian Abbey was founded there by
Robert De St Martin . A
Royal Charter was granted in
1198 by
Richard I to ''Rotherbridge''. The abbey was dissolved in
1538 ; however, many of the oldest existing houses in the village date from the
14th and
15th Centuries .
