''Rise of the Dragon'' is a graphic Adventure Game that was released in 1990 for the DOS computer and later remade for the Sega CD (1994). The Sega CD version added voice actors to the game and was given a MA-17 rating by the Videogames Rating Council for profanity, references to a fictional illicit drug, cross-dressing, prostitution and partial female nudity. STORYLINE The game is set in a future, dark Cyberpunk version of Los Angeles in 2053, although some common Gibsonian concepts like Cyberspace and the matrix are absent. The game's dark and seedy vision of the future is often compared to the computer game '' Snatcher '' or to the film '' Blade Runner ''. Much, if not most, of the visual style, atmosphere, and even the main character owes much to Blade Runner, including the future Los Angeles with a large immigrant Chinese population and the name and attire of the title character. The main character is William 'Blade' Hunter, a cynical former officer of the Los Angeles Police Department , having become a private detective out of necessity after being dismissed from the force for using excessive violence. When the mayor's rebellious teenage daughter is killed by a new illicit and powerfully mutagenic designer drug at a seedy nightclub, he hires Hunter to track down who is responsible for her death. This leads Hunter to discover an underground Chinese Mafia operation led by megalomaniacal drug kingpin intent on World Domination , who intends to distribute the drug, which is both mutagenic and lethal, into the city's water supply. The final battle of the game sees the drug boss, using the drug, turn into a monstrous Dragon . TECHNICAL DETAILS The game is very similar to the other 2 adventuers released by Dynamix of that time ( Willy Beamish and Heart Of China ). The screen shows roughly what Blade sees. Movement occurs with the cursor, which becomes either an arrow to proceed to another screen, or a magnifying glass (to zoom or get closer to some scene). The action is by default divided in 3 days and has a time meter, but the plot requires the player to find a way and push the villains' plans back by 2 days, or else the game ends. Travelling between places advances time faster so the player has to plan strategically his moves. Also, there are some alternative solutions to puzzles, and some moves or dialogue options will influence the plot in some later time. Some things must be done in some given time, or else some plot is missed. There are also 2 arcade-platform scenes, one of which is optional and is shown if the player does something in Day 1. The default one takes place at end of the game and ends with you battling the dragon. SEGA CD VERSION Several Differences existed between the Sega CD and DOS Versions. The most prominent being Voice Acting. William Blade Hunter is voiced by Cam Clarke . Also, the Graphics of the Sega CD Version have a more limited pallate then the DOS Version. Some Fans believe this smaller Pallate gives the game more atmosphere. Interestingly enough, the Sega CD version's palette resembles the green tint of The Matrix Films , 7 years later. Another notable difference is the removal of a scene with a French Kiss and some implied Sex, despite getting a MA-17 label by Sega of America. This is most likely due to the then current attention that was being paid to violence in video games (i.e. Night Trap and Mortal Kombat ), although the fact that games being rated by the Sega's in-housing system were still be censored underminded the crediblity of the rating system.
