It is one of the most prominent High-tech Research And Development centers in the United States and has been compared to Silicon Valley . It was created in 1959 by nearby Universities and enterprises. Karl Robbins bought the land where the park is now built. The park is 7,000 acres (28 km²) situated in a Pine Forest with approximately 1,100 acres (4.5 km²) for development. As of the early 2000s, more than 100 R&D facilities exist at RTP with some 38,500 employees. The park is next to Interstate 40 and the Durham Freeway.
