Repentigny Ville (City) in Québec , located north of Montréal , on the St. Lawrence River . It is the famous hometown of popular Néo-trad band Les Cowboys Fringants . Population (2001 census) 54,550 Demographics (according to Statistics Canada 2001 census) Growth Rate (1996-2001): 1.3% Total Private Dwellings: 20499 Area: 24.48 sq. km. Density: 2228 people per sq. km. Mayor: Chantal Deschamps Surrounding Municipalities: Montreal, Quebec Laval, Quebec Terrebonne, Quebec Saint-Sulpice, Quebec L'Assomption, Quebec Le Gardeur, Quebec The city of Repentigny takes part in the L'Assomption MRC public transportation network effort, which serves Repentigny, L'Assomption, Charlemagne, Le Gardeur, and links to Joliette or to Terrebonne. HISTORY It was founded in 1670 by Jean-Baptiste Le Gardeur , son of Seigneur Pierre Le Gardeur . During the town's first 250 years, Repentigny was only inhabited by a few hundred peasants, or Habitants , and was an agricultural community. In 1677, the first population census only shows 30 inhabitants. Its first mayor was Benjamin Moreau 1855.
