Religious Segregation

MUSLIM WORLD

Religious segregation occurs in the Muslim world, where some nations deny non- Muslims , including Jew s and Christian s, some of the civil rights and voting privileges they grant to Muslims. Many Muslim countries consign non-Muslim Monotheists to the status of Dhimmi s, both officially and by custom. Saudi Arabia in particular is notorious for very stringent religious laws banning the practice of non-Muslim religions, even prescribing imprisonment and the Death Penalty for attempting to convert Muslims to other religions.

ISRAEL

The Israeli human rights organisation B'Tslem criticises Israel for apartheid like atcivities:
"Israel has established in the Occupied Territories a separation cum discrimination regime, in which it maintains two systems of laws, and a person’s rights are based on his or her national origin. This regime is the only of its kind in the world, and brings to mind dark regimes of the past, such as the Apartheid regime in South Africa." {Link without Title}

Israel and its supporters argue that this comparison is ungrounded, maintaining that Israel has over one million Arab citizens, and they are given the same rights as the rest of the population.

Both Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch express concern over human rights within Israel.

From Human Rights Watch: "Government-run Arab schools are a world apart from government-run Jewish schools. In virtually every respect, Palestinian Arab children get an education inferior to that of Jewish children, and their relatively poor performance in school reflects this." {Link without Title}

From Amnesty International:
"Certain abuses committed by the Israeli army constituted crimes against humanity and war crimes, including unlawful killings; extensive and wanton destruction of property; obstruction of medical assistance and targeting of medical personnel; torture; and the use of Palestinians as “human shields”" {Link without Title}

"In August the UN Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination called for the revocation of the Citizenship and Entry into Israel Law, passed the previous year and extended for six months in July. The law institutionalized racial discrimination. It barred Israeli Arab citizens married to Palestinians from the Occupied Territories from living with their spouses in Israel, and forced families to either live apart or leave the country altogether." {Link without Title}

South African Archbishop emeritus Desmond Tutu has accused Israel of practising apartheid and said that "it reminded me so much of what happened to us black people in South Africa". {Link without Title}

NORTHERN IRELAND

Many Irish Nationalist s and Republicans have described Northern Ireland as being a Gerrymander ed or even Apartheid state, on the grounds that it was created to ensure a built-in Protestant minority, resulting in discrimination against Catholic s in government, Education , housing and employment. One legacy of this has been that most state schools in Northern Ireland are either Protestant or Catholic, although there now also a number of integrated schools. This has often exacerbated religious, political and cultural differences between the two comunities.

Between 1922 and 1972 , Northern Ireland was governed by the Parliament Of Northern Ireland , which was Protestant-dominated, while at local government level, electoral boundaries were devised to create Protestant majorities. The outbreak of the Troubles led to the imposition of direct rule by the British Government , which has since sought to introduce power sharing between unionists and nationalists.
