Racism In Mass Media

Racism in the Mass Media is common, particularly in Cinema and Television , where some Ethnic Group s, in particular Black People , are frequently subject to Stereotyping .

UNITED STATES

Blacks and other minority groups have managed to have a presence in mass media, but even so racism in the radio, presses and television of this country is common. Hollywood films often present blacks, have been accused of racial favoritism.

In recent years, the depiction of minority ethnic groups in drama has improved, with black and other minority actors being more commonly used to portray heroes or ordinary people, and characters from minority groups more commonly being used as Protagonist s in drama, thus allowing more minority actors to become leading men and women rather than supporting actors. Some Black actors, such as Will Smith , Denzel Washington , Samuel L. Jackson and Halle Berry have become major stars, with their appeal transcending racial boundaries. However, ethnic stereotypes are still very common in other aspects of mass media such as News reporting.

EUROPE

Racism in Europe has frequently been in evidence, particularly against Immigrants and Roma (Gypsies). Illegal Immigrant s are often described as "invaders" or objectified as an "avalanche" or "tide". Roma and other non-European immigrants are often depicted as criminals.

LATIN AMERICA

The mass media in Latin America is characterized by the influence of the Colonial Mentality , in particular on television, where many of the entertainers, and television reporters are white, regardless of whether white people are the majority in the country. The media in general present the stereotype of the white race as the ideal of beauty. Other groups frequently accept this condition, in the phenomenon of Self-racism , which is very common in Latin America.
