Formerly the location of a large United States Navy base ( Quonset Point Naval Air Station ), once the home of the Naval Construction Battalions known as the SeaBees and was the off-season home of the Antarctic Development Squadron Six (VXE-6) during the 1960s. Quonset Point gave its name to the Quonset Hut , a standardized temporary structure used by the US military starting in World War II . The peninsula is now used for industrial purposes and is partially abandoned. A major industrial tenant is a hull-fabrication and outfitting facility for Electric Boat Corporation . Rhode Island State Highway 403 is being rebuilt as a Freeway branching from RI 4 to serve the area; it is also served by a Railroad spur from Amtrak 's Northeast Corridor (which the Providence And Worcester Railroad operates along). |
