The compilations are sold at a discount price, usually less than half the price of most new releases, as the labels consider them to be a good promotion for their bands.

Punk-O-Rama showcases music of the eponymous punk genre, but artists from other genres, such as Indie Rock or Hip-hop , are sometimes featured. Volume 4 includes Tom Waits ' Big in Japan, and Volumes 8-10 have included tracks by Sage Francis, Atmosphere, and Eyedea & Abilities.

Epitaph Records have retired the Punk-O-Rama series of compilations, the ''Unsound'' series will be the replacement. The first in the ''Unsound'' series will be released on June 6th, 2006.
