The land feature where the suburb of Punchbowl ultimately got its name isn't actually in the surburb of Punchbowl, but rather in the nearby suburb of Belfield . This came to be after a series of historical events which started when settlers named a circular valley some three kilometres away "the punch bowl". The road that led to this valley was then named "Punch Bowl Road" (now "Punchbowl Road"), and when a railway station was built on this road, the surrounding suburb came to be known as Punchbowl.
