The philosophy of the book appears to be based on what literature critic Harold Bloom refers to as American Gnosticism , i.e. what he considers to be the religion of Ralph Waldo Emerson and William James as opposed to traditional Christianity . Others have referred to this as Transcendentalism . Although the book is expected to have sold more than 50,000,000 copies world-wide, it is widely considered extremely difficult to the extent of being impenetrable. In 2002 a global on-line Discussion Forum was established, with the purpose of trying to find the hidden meanings of the book. SEE ALSO EXTERNAL LINKS |
