Information About

Provinces Of Turkey

A province is administered by an appointed governor ('' Vali ''), and was formerly termed a " Governorate ".

Each province has a government center (''il merkezi'') in the central district (''merkez ilçe''), and may include other districts (''ilçe'' singular, ''ilçeler'' plural).
The government center usually bears the same name as the province; the exceptions are Hatay (in Antakya), İçel (in Mersin), Kocaeli (in İzmit), and Sakarya (in Adapazarı).

A district may cover both rural and urban areas. The central district is administered by an appointed "vice-governor" and other districts by a "sub-governor" ('' Kaymakam '').
Each municipality (''belediye'') in its urban zone (''belde'') is an Administrative Division subject to elections depending on the province.

  • After Zonguldak the ordering is according to traffic plate numbers of provinces, rather than alphabetical, because the provinces were newly created and named by the government.
