Information AboutProvidence Health Care Centre |

Providence Healthcare’s Catholic legacy dates back to 1857 when the Sisters Of St. Joseph founded the original ''House of Providence''. Over the next 105 years, it provided a home for thousands of Toronto's aged, and cared for widows and orphans. In the late 1950s, the Sisters of St. Joseph relocated the facility to some farmland at the north west corner of Warden and St. Clair Ave. East in the former municipality of Scarborough . The new facility was called the ''Providence Villa and Hospital''. The new facility was opened in 1962 under the supervision of Chairman Vern B. Moore . Over the next 30 years the facility began outreach to the local community as well continuing to provide a home for senior citizens. In 1990 the name was changed to ''Providence Centre'' to reflect this expanded role. In 1998, the Sisters of St. Joseph transferred control of the facility to the ''Catholic Health Corporation of Ontario''. The facility remains a member of the Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Toronto. In 2004, the name was changed to ''Providence Healthcare''. EXTERNAL LINKS |
