The Prague Uprising was an attempt by the Czech Resistance to free the city of Prague from German occupation during World War Two . It began on May 5, 1945. The uprising was triggered on the morning of May 5 by a broadcast on Czech radio. In a mixture of Czech and German , the broadcast announced "It is just six o' clock". A group of Czech policemen attempted to sieze the radio building on Vinohradská, unknowing that a strong detachment of SS soldiers was already stationed there, resulting in bitter fighting. With the sounds of combat in the background, the radio station continued to broadcast, encouraging citizens to revolt. At about 1AM on the May 6 1945 the radio asked people to build barricades and over a thousand had been erected by morning. The resistance managed to seize half of the city before Germans managed to react. But the next hours were critical, because rebels were running out of ammo and had only a few AT weapons while Germans had a lot of tanks at their disposal. One of most crucial elements that decided the fight was that the Russian Liberation Army , led by Andrey Vlasov , joined Czech rebels in their fight against Germans. Unlike the rebels this army was well-equipped and trained. Eventually on May 9 1945, the Russian army arrived at Prague and the city was free. SEE ALSO
