Powell County is a County located in the State of Montana . As of 2000 , the population is 7,180. Its County Seat is Deer Lodge 6 . GEOGRAPHY According to the U.S. Census Bureau , the county has a total area of 6,042 Km&2 (2,333 Mi&2 ). 6,024 km&2 (2,326 mi&2) of it is land and 17 km&2 (7 mi&2) of it is water. DEMOGRAPHICS As of the Census 2 of 2000, there were 7,180 people, 2,422 households, and 1,634 families residing in the county. The Population Density was 1/km&2 (3/mi&2). There were 2,930 housing units at an average density of 0/km&2 (1/mi&2). The racial makeup of the county was 92.52% White , 0.50% Black or African American , 3.51% Native American , 0.43% Asian , 0.00% Pacific Islander , 0.74% from Other Races , and 2.30% from two or more races. 1.95% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race. There were 2,422 households out of which 29.50% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.50% were Married Couples living together, 7.70% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.50% were non-families. 28.60% of all households were made up of individuals and 13.30% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.39 and the average family size was 2.93. In the county the population was spread out with 21.20% under the age of 18, 7.80% from 18 to 24, 30.80% from 25 to 44, 26.20% from 45 to 64, and 14.00% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 143.20 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 151.40 males. The median income for a household in the county was $30,625, and the median income for a family was $35,836. Males had a median income of $26,366 versus $20,457 for females.
