A BRIEF HISTORY Port Dover was originally inhabited by the Neutral First Nations , an ancient First Nations nation. For more than 200 years, Port Dover was host to many native people, European explorers and missionaries. One of the first group of settlers in this area were the United Empire Loyalist s, who created the small village of Dover Mills (named Dover Mills after the port of Dover in the English county Kent ) in the early 1800's. It was later burned to the ground by Americans in the War Of 1812 . The only building left standing was the McQueen home. The town was rebuilt in the 1830's and the name changed to Port Dover. Port Dover has a mild climate and a bountiful environment. Port Dover boasts, not just a great fishing industry but Port Dover is surrounded with great agricultural lands. Port Dover joined with the city of Nanticoke in 1974 and as a result we gained the benefits of regional government in and around Dover. This will change again. In 2001, Haldimand and Norfolk Counties were separated and became single-tier counties. The town has experienced extreme change, but remains to carry on in a harmonious way. Port Dover's history, environment and the wonderful shore of Lake Erie, ensure that Port Dover will continue to maintain its popularity into the new millennium. In the summer, Port Dover is very busy with thousands of tourists who come to swim in Lake Erie and enjoy Port Dover and the surrounding areas. At one time, the fresh water fishing fleet based in the town's harbour was believed to be the largest in the world. Even with declining fish stocks, fishing continues to be important to the community. The most famous place to eat in Port Dover is at the ''Arbor'' outdoor restaurant. For more than 80 years, they have served ''Orange Glows'' and ''Cherry Glows'' instead of Sodas and their French Fries and Arbor Dogs are the most famous in Norfolk County. Since 1981, there has been a tradition of Motorcycle enthusiasts gathering in the town on Friday The 13th . Port Dover has about 6,000 people, and is growing quickly. New subdivisions are being build on the western and eastern sides of town.
