He was born in Paris , France . Pierre and his partner Andrée Joly are considered among the first notable pairs figure skating teams. They were the French national champions from 1924 until 1935 , and won three Olympic medals. They refused to defend their title at the 1936 Winter Olympics , however, in protest over Nazi Germany . The pair won four World Championships, competing in alternate years. Pierre also competed in individual events, and he won ten national titles. In 1936 the pair turned professional, and in 1940 emigrated to the United States . They became coaches, and would train Olympic gold-medal winning skaters Carol Heiss and Scott Hamilton . Pierre and Andrée were married in 1929 . The couple had a son Jean-Pierre , who became the U.S. pairs champion with Donna Jeanne Pospisil in 1945 and 1946 . Jean-Pierre was killed in an automobile accident in 1948 . Pierre died in Boyne City, Michigan . Pierre and Andrée were entered into the World Figure Skating Hall of Fame in 1976 . EXTERNAL LINKS |
