Quimby, born in Lebanon, New Hampshire , became a clock-maker in Maine , and from about the 1840s developed ideas about the ability of people to Heal diseases through the mind and through mental transference. This belief in healing derived from a theology of a loving God and a spiritual reality that Quimby saw as deeper and more real than that of the Natural World . He began teaching his views to others; Mary Baker Eddy (who later founded Christian Science) studied with him for a time, as did others who eventually inspired the New Thought Movement.
