Life of Philip of Taranto


1278 Philip is born on November 10 , 1278 in Naples .

1294 In September , 1294 in L'Aquila , Philip marries Thamar Angela Komnene Dukaina , daughter of Nicephoros I Dukas Komnenos, Despot Of Epirus , and Anna Kantakuzene; with this marriage, Philip becomes leader of the ''Aetholian league'' and ''Prince of Corfu''. He also buys the title and much of the possessions of the Despotate Of Epirus .

1299 Philip is defeated and taken prisoner in the Battle Of La Falconara by Frederick III Of Sicily .

1301 His father Charles II resigns to him the Kingdom of Albania and a claim to the Principality Of Achaea , but Achaea is held by Isabelle Villehardouin and her husband, Philip of Savoy.

1307 Isabelle and Philip of Savoy are deposed, and Philip becomes ruling Prince Of Achaea .

1309 Philip divorces his wife Thamar.

1312 Philip drops his claims on the Despotate Of Epirus .

1313 Philip marries Catherine, daughter of Charles Of Valois , and becomes Titular Emperor Of Constantinople ''jure uxoris'' (in right of his wife). He loses the Principality Of Achaea to his rival, Marguerite of Hainault, and her husband, Louis of Burgundy.

1315 Philip leads a Neapolitan army to the aid of Florence , but both are defeated by Pisa at the Battle Of Monte Catino .

1332 Philip dies on December 23 , 1332 .
