Petticoat Lane itself was a street running roughly along the path of Middlesex Street, and was the site of the original market. The street was almost certainly named after the market, originally established by the Huguenot weavers who had settled in the area, to sell their products. They largely sold lace and petticoats. The prudish Victorians changed the name because of the reference to ladies undergarments. Petticoat Lane Market still specialises in clothing, although now mass-produced. The market is open Monday-to-Friday on Wentworth Street alone, but on Sunday extends over many of the surrounding streets. It is closed on Saturday. Aldgate East , Aldgate , and Liverpool Street Station are the nearest tube stations to the market. The market (along with the other three local markets) are signposted from both stations. SEE ALSO |
