Peterborough railway station serves the city of Peterborough , England . It lies on the East Coast Main Line (ECML). It is a major interchange, as it benefits from having both the North-South ECML as well as East-West local services. There is on site car parking, a large Royal Mail Sorting Office, and a hotel all within easy reach. Within 10 minutes walk is Peterborough city centre, and the Queensgate shopping centre.

DESCRIPTION

The station itself has a small concourse and ticket office, of which was redesigned and opened in September of 2004. The new facilities were part of GNER ’s £10 million station improvement programme to modernise facilities at key stations along the East Coast Main Line. The modern travel centre is part of GNER’s £1 million station improvement programme at Peterborough station, which includes new passenger lounges on platforms 2 and 3, new toilet facilities on platforms 2, 4 and 5, new customer information screens and improved security including the installation of CCTV cameras within the station and car-park.

The Concourse also holds a small shop and Cafe. Platforms 1,2 and 3 are for trains to London Kings Cross. Platform 1 is a bay platform for the terminating First Capital Connect trains. FCC also uses platform three with trains alternating between the two. Platform two, therefore is for the express GNER services. Platforms 2 and 3 are also used by Central Trains for Spalding. It needs remembering that all platforms are booked specifically for each train, it is therefore not uncommon if there are delays to see Express GNER trains using platform three.

Platforms 3,4 and 5 are accessible by use of a passenger footbridge or, for disabled people the ramp at the far end of platform 2 of which Staff will assist if asked. Platform 4 is for use of Express GNER trains heading North towards Scotland. This platform along with Platform 5 is also used by Central Trains to Norwich and North to Liverpool and Birmingham as well as One trains to Shenfield.

There are two set of tracks between Platforms 3 and 4 for Non-stop services. Used occasionally by GNER trains, but more commonly once an hour by Hull Trains. Across the Passenger tracks at Platform 5 there are goods lines which used to service the old industries on site. Some of these tracks are still used by the freight services.

As has happened with other stations along the network the station has a team of ticket examiners on a crack down for fare evaders. For general assistance there is a CIP desk located on Platform 2 as well as Customer Services near the first class waiting room and customer services on Platform 5. Platforms 2 and 4 have toilets for both males, females and disabled people as well as a Cafe on Platform 4/5

OTHER STATIONS IN PETERBOROUGH

The full and correct name of Peterborough Railway Station is '''Peterborough North''', because of a second station in Peterborough called Peterborough East . Peterborough East was located just past the town bridge on the Norwich Line now operated by Central Trains. Details are hazy but Peterborough East was closed post-modernisation, some pictures show the station as having two platforms however only the remains of one platform is visible to date.
