Pete was the twin brother of
Pauline Fowler and the father of
Ian Beale . He led a simple life selling fruit and vegetables on his market stall and obeying mother
Lou's every command. Pete was married to
Pat Harris in the
1960s , but their marriage fell apart due to their stormy rows and Pat's affairs. They had two sons,
David and
Simon .
His second wife was
Kathy Hills . They had a much happier marriage and one more son,
Ian . The marriage fell apart after Kathy
was raped by her boss in 1988.
Pete's final love was Rose Chapman. They knew each other from their teenage years when they were lovers, but when they met again Rose was married to local violent gangster Alfie Chapman. They began an affair, and Rose nursed Alfie during his illness up until his death, when they outed as a couple. They escaped from Albert Square to avoid Alfie's family, and as they headed back, they were killed off-screen in a car crash, which was believed to have been set up by Alfie's family.
When Pete's first wife, Pat, returned to Walford in
1986 , she revealed that her son, Simon, was not Pete's biological child. She admitted that she was unsure of his paternity, as she had an affair with Pete's brother, Kenny, who was banished to
New Zealand by their mother, Lou, after she discovered the truth; and she had a brief fling with Pete's best friend,
Den Watts , shortly after their marriage broke down. She later confessed that her second husband, Brian Wicks, was the father of both Simon and David. The latest ''
EastEnders '' comment on this was that the whole story had been mixed about and fiddled with, that it will be impossible to ever know whether Pete was the true father or not, but the best assumption is that Pete ''is'' the father of David (the oldest son), and Kenny is the father of Simon (the youngest).
