Pennamite-yankee War

The 1662 charter of Connecticut established its claim. The 1681 charter of Pennsylvania established its claim. Both colonies purchased the same land from the Indians . Connecticut sent settlers to the land in 1754 ; Pennsylvania sent settlers in 1769 and established a settlement through two lessees, Ogden and Stewart.

In 1771 , Connecticut's claim was confirmed by the King . Settlers from Connecticut erected a new town in 1773 which they named Westmoreland. The Pennsylvanians did not quit, however, and in 1775 the militia of Northumberland, Co. , made an abortive attack on a settlement. On July 3, 1778 occurred the famous Wyoming Massacre , which was an episodic event within the Pennamite-Yankee War.

Conflicts between the two sides in the war continued, so Congress issued a ruling in 1782 upholding the Pennsylvanians' claim. Umbrage remained, though, until the Pennsylvania Legislature confirmed the various titles in 1788 .
