Pekanbaru, which means New Market, is a city that is the furthest navigable port on the Siak River . Oil, which was discovered nearby in 1939, was the driving force behind the development of Pekanbaru. Major world oil company exist across Riau province like Chevron/Caltex and many others, also major domestic company already here to boost local competence in business and services.

Near Pekanbaru is today the worlds largest cellulose (pulp) mill, located at Kerinci. Named Riau Andalan Pulp and Paper, producing 1,2 million tons per year, it belongs to the APRIL Group. There is also another large pulp and paper mill near Pekanbaru, named Perawang, belonging to the APP Group.
