Pearl River is in the southwest part of the Town Of Orangetown . Pearl River is presently the site of the international headquarters of the Zeta Psi Fraternity Of North America Inc . Its location is 15 South Henry Street, Pearl River, NY 10965. Pearl River is also the site of One Blue Hill Plaza , Rockland County 's first commercial Skyscraper . HISTORY Original Name: "Muddy Creek;" A myth is that the town changed its name in the early 1900s because of pearls found in the river. GEOGRAPHY Pearl River is located at 41°3'50" North, 74°0'37" West (41.063996, -74.010298). According to the United States Census Bureau , the CDP has a total area of 18.6 Km&2 (7.2 Mi&2 ). 17.7 km&2 (6.8 mi&2) of it is land and 0.9 km&2 (0.3 mi&2) of it is water. The total area is 4.87% water. DEMOGRAPHICS As of the Census of 2000, there were 15,553 people, 5,539 households, and 4,209 families residing in the CDP. The Population Density was 877.9/km&2 (2,273.2/mi&2). There were 5,636 housing units at an average density of 318.1/km&2 (823.8/mi&2). The racial makeup of the CDP was 95.13% White , 0.39% African American , 0.05% Native American , 3.16% Asian , 0.02% Pacific Islander , 0.57% from Other Races , and 0.68% from two or more races. 3.44% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race. There were 5,539 households out of which 33.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 64.4% were Married Couples living together, 8.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 24.0% were non-families. 20.7% of all households were made up of individuals and 8.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.79 and the average family size was 3.26. In the CDP the population was spread out with 25.3% under the age of 18, 6.0% from 18 to 24, 29.3% from 25 to 44, 24.7% from 45 to 64, and 14.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 93.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.3 males. The median income for a household in the CDP was $76,692, and the median income for a family was $91,618. Males had a median income of $58,966 versus $39,452 for females. The Per Capita Income for the CDP was $31,417. 3.4% of the population and 2.2% of families were below the Poverty Line . 3.1% of those under the age of 18 and 4.7% of those 65 and older were living below the poverty line. Pearl River is well-known for its large Irish-American community and hosts the second largest St. Patrick's Day parade in New York state, typically on the Sunday following St. Patrick's Day.
