Assistant District Attorney Paul Robinette (played by Richard Brooks ) was a Fictional Character who appeared in the TV drama series '' Law & Order '' from the Pilot Episode in 1990 until the final episode of the third season, "Benevolence," in 1993 . Raised in Harlem , Robinette worked his way through Law School and into the Manhattan District Attorney 's office at a young age. Beginning in 1987 , he worked under Executive Assistant District Attorney Benjamin Stone , whom he came to think of as a mentor, despite occasionally disagreeing with his Prosecution methods. For much of his career, Robinette advocated Racial Equality through equal treatment, including equal punishment; while he abhorred Racism , he also felt little sympathy for black people who turned to crime. He insisted on being given the same opportunities as the equal of his white colleagues, without any added advantages from Affirmative Action policies. A pivotal moment in his life and career was during the show's first season, during a case in which he and Stone were prosecuting a corrupt Civil Rights leader, when Stone asked him, "Do you think of yourself as a black lawyer, or as a lawyer who's black?" Originally considering himself the former, he would gradually come to think of Race as a more integral part of his reasons for practicing Law . He left the DA's office in 1993 and eventually became a defense attorney who represented his clients as victims of institutionalized racism. He was replaced by Claire Kincaid . Initially, his disappearance from the show was never explained and was not mentioned in either the third season end or fourth season opener, although NBC Press Release s at the time of the character's departure mentioned that Robinette had moved to a Park Avenue law firm. However, on the 4th season DVD, a deleted scene (Episode 3 "Discord") includes Lt. Anita Van Buren asking to see Robinette. Stone responds with "Uh, You'll have to take a cab uptown. Park Avenue. Woodward, Martin, and Schwartz." When Robinette reappeared twice in 1996, as opposing counsel to Stone's successor, Jack McCoy . His last appearance on the show was in 2005 , defending a nurse accused of performing Sterilizations on promiscuous black teenagers whom she deemed emotionally unfit to become parents. |
